How to Find the Best Candidates in the AI Era

By Sawyer Smith - January 6th, 2024
Advice Article

The recent advancements in AI technology have prompted a lot of discussion surrounding how artificial intelligence may affect the labor market. Many fear that their jobs will soon be replaced by their hyper-efficient robot counterparts. What isn’t discussed as prominently, however, are the ways AI might help job seekers land a new position, and in turn, how artificial intelligence muddies the waters of candidate pools.

In a competitive job market like the one we’re currently in, employers need to find ways to streamline the hiring process and decrease the size of their ‘yes’ and ‘maybe’ pools. Unfortunately, with the help of AI, unqualified candidates can send out resumes in droves and sneak past at least the first few rounds of recruitment.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Having more applicants can lead to a wider, more diverse range of candidates, but it also makes it much harder for recruiters and hiring managers to decide who to interview.

For the job seeker, AI is a huge time saver, but for some employers, it can present a hiring nightmare.

The Ways Job Seekers Use AI

Let’s take a look at the most common ways job seekers utilize AI when applying.
  1. Grammar and Spelling
Many candidates will send their resume through a rudimentary artificial intelligence program that checks for grammar and spelling mistakes. Some of these programs may also help them reword sentences to make them sound less clunky. Research shows that individuals who took spelling and grammar feedback from AI received 7.8% more offers than those who didn't. That’s not surprising, considering roughly 80% of recruiters state they'd reject a resume simply on the basis of spelling or grammar errors.
  1. Resume/Cover Letter Building
Not only is it common for job seekers to use artificial intelligence to help them write resumes, but the efficiency provided by AI text curators also makes it easier for candidates to customize their application materials. In many cases, people are relying on AI chatbots to write their entire resume and cover letter for each job, which is why they can send out more applications than ever before.
  1. Interview Preparation
Finally, job seekers are now starting to use artificial intelligence—specifically AI chatbots—to help them prepare for interviews. The AI provides the job seeker with sample interview questions and critiques their responses.

In and of itself, this last example may seem harmless, but when combined with the first two, you can start to see how someone who is truly unqualified could end up making it through every round of the recruitment process with the help of AI. In the end, they may even be offered the job.

The Way Recruiters Can Use AI

On the other side of the equation, recruiters can also use AI to their advantage. Applicant tracking systems are very popular these days, with 90% of employers stating they use an ATS to manage applications. ATS systems can scan resumes in record time, and use predictive analytics to find standout candidates.

Some recruiters also use chatbots on the company’s website or automated email responses to “provide candidates with immediate help and answer their questions about the job or application process. This allows recruiters to engage with candidates more effectively and save time by automating routine tasks.” – Jack Kelly of Forbes

The Role of Recruitment Firms Like CyberCoders

For hiring managers who either don’t have access to a high-end ATS, or have never used artificial intelligence to find candidates, the efficiency claims made in this and many other articles, might seem exaggerated. AI is a very powerful tool, but using it doesn’t come naturally to everyone, and learning how it works might waste even more time.

That’s when another resource may come in handy—recruitment firms. Navigating this increasingly competitive hiring market and trying to sift through hundreds of applications for each open position is only going to get more complicated as AI advances further. There are even examples of people using AI to generate entirely fake resumes just to see how far into the hiring process the bot itself can go.
